I’ve recently started using Starling, an app-based bank, which lets you create savings goals (there are others that do the same now, incidentally, but this is the one I have chosen to use). I decided to get really micro about all the things I probably need to save for but up to now, have chosen to just try to manage from my take-home pay, and it was a revelation. I now have four short-term jars set up: boys’ birthdays, holidays, Christmas 2020 and “emergency fund” (that last one is a savings jar made up of my spending ’round-ups’). The revelation is being able to visualise each jar clearly, every day if I want to on my phone, and to check in on my progress towards targets. This simple process has made me a lot more focused.
